Years ago I saw a frazzled parent following their child through a crowded amusement park, holding onto that child's leash. You know, the kind attached to a harness that wraps around the little one's torso and makes it look like you've highjacked a terrier's doggie leash for the day.
I thought that putting your child on a leash was at best, hilarious, and at worst, abusive.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Last night, I took Monkey outside our apartment building for one last gasp of fun - drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. It was hot outside, but hotter in the apartment, so out we went to get chalky and dusty and giggle a bit before bathtime and bed.
And, becase I'm now at 19 weeks, I'm a little thick (ahem! ok, friggin' big already) and therefore slow to get off the ground.
Monkey was standing next to me as I drew on the ground. And as a family walked past, she decided it would be a fine time to take off running. While laughing. As I struggled to catch up (she's FAST) and hollered STOP at the top of my lungs.
See, she was running towards a street that should be quiet - but cars whiz down it, and they are coming around a curve and likely wouldn't see a small toddler darting out in the twilight.
I thought I was going to watch my daughter get hit by a car, that she could die in front of me, if I didn't catch her in time.
My heart was pounding from the anxiety when I caught up with her, and let me tell you, we went straight upstairs for a 5 minute timeout. Longest one she's had in her life.
She's fearless and testing her boundaries. I'm fearful and thinking about making her wear a wrist tether when we're walking outside.
Seems I just got a refresher course on judging others.

We're in for a bumpy ride
Monkey continues to amaze and confound me.
On the one hand, she has continued her streak of peacefully going to bed without a peep. Literally, says "I love you" and then boom - out like a light. (and can I tell you? when she says "I love you" umprompted, I melt. Good thing she doesn't know to ask for a pony right then...)
On the other hand, she loses her sh*t when her vision of the world is marred by reality.
You know, like when I cut the peach instead of giving it to her whole. The horror of it all!!
"no cut, no cut, no cut arrrghhh!! gnash teeth, wail wail sob sob shudder"
Um, ok, here's the part that isn't cut.
But no, the peach is ruined.
I think being a toddler is hard work. And that we're in for a bumpy ride. Good thing she's so damn wonderful the other 90% of the time. You know, so she can see the ripe old age of three. Just sayin'.

Bonding time
Last night M was a rock star - and by that I mean he gave me the Yankees tickets he got from work and stayed home with Monkey while I went to the fun (but embarrasing - we left when it was Orioles 11, Yankees 0....and I'm afraid to see what the final score was!) game with my friend and fellow Yankees fan Jeremy.
Jeremy and I had a blast. We were up in the deck with a great view, the sun was shining but the wind was pleasantly blowing so we weren't hot, and the drunks around us were entertaining, rather than obnoxious. All in all, a good outing.
Meanwhile, back on the home front, M fed Monkey, took her on an outing for gelato (she spurned lemon but LOVED pineapple), gave her a bath and put her to bed.
And, apparently the streak of going to bed with grace and humor continued! Last night Monkey got into bed (well, her crib), and when M asked her if she wanted to lay down so that he could put her blankie over her she said "yes" and that was that! Lights out, no fuss, no muss, one soundly sleeping child. Wow.
Of course, I was eager to wake Monkey up this morning. She is so incredibly sweet in the mornings, she almost gives me a toothache. Seriously, this kid wakes up smiling! (wish that I could! harrumph). And, since last night was all about daddy, he's the first thing she asked for.
M came through the door, I moved aside, and the look of love and adoration on Monkey's face when she smiled up at her daddy made my day. That tinkling sound? That was the sound of my heart shattering like brittle glass and raining down on the ground.
And the best part is? When BGC#2 arrives, when I'm focused on nursing her and tending to her newborn needs? Monkey will turn to daddy and find everything in the world she needs right there. This is going to be a time of incredible bonding for them. And it makes me happy.

Where is my daughter and who are you?
So Monkey has a bedtime routine that involves, among other things, delaying sleep like a Master Jedi Knight with her mindtricks, and fighting sleep like a madwoman.
Usually, she'll flick the light on, and continue to cry for a bit, then settle into her crib and play with one of the gazillion items she's wheedled out of us and that everntually we'll need to pry out from underneath her sleeping form, later in the night.
Only last night? She not only asked to be put into her crib after I read her last book of the night, but then she said "thank you mommy" and promptly laid down in her crib to sleep!
No tears! No last demands for a 18th book or 29th toy for her enjoyment! No flicking the lights back on after I left!

Open work space my a$$
On December 25th (baby #2s's official due-date!) my work is moving to a new building on campus. One dedicated solely to alumni relations, communication & development. With an alumni welcome center, space for alumni to rest and read in, surf the internet, and hold events. It's even going to be a green building. So on the surface, that all sounds great, right?
Only one problem - we're going to be in f*cking cubicles. Every single one of us. Ugh.
Adding insult to injury, the bathrooms on each floor will be single-stall, gender neutral. And so help me g*d, if any of my male colleagues head off to use those bathrooms with a newspaper tucked under their arm, there will be hell to pay! They can go down to the first floor and use the gendered public bathroom, thank you very much.
But today - today's tidbit of information is the piece de la resistance. When I approached HR with a question of where was I supposed to pump (you know, three times a day, 20-60 minutes per session depending upon set up and break down of the equipment, 5 days a week for three f*cking months - only as estimated 3600 to 10800 minutes of my life, aka 60 to 180 HOURS OF TIME) they assured me blithly - oh, no problem! Use a conference room!
Only, today I learned that ever SINGLE F*CKING conference room is windowed and "open" meaning anyone can look in. WTF?
Apparently my choices are going to be:
1) balance on the toilet seat and yell at people that pound on the door asking me to hurry up, or
2) take at least three hours out of my day by walking to and from the only "lactation" room on campus that is several blocks away (and get fired for working 25 hours a week, nice), or
3) balance on the toilet seat of the gender-specific public bathroom on the first floor and hope that too much aerosolized crap doesn't float through the air and somehow get into the breast milk I am agonizingly pumping. Gross.
And people wonder why working mothers have a rough time when they come back to work. And I LIKE working!

Vogue, look out!
Nana arranged for Monkey and her cousin Emma D to have a professional photograph taken while we were visiting. She bought matching (beautiful!) dresses, which Monkey will wear again at Christmas, for both of the girls. And we were told to procure cream ribbons for the hair....
and lo and behold, these kids are damn cute!

Recent Conversations with Monkey
Monkey: Sit daddy's lap?
Me: No sweetie, the plane is landing, you need to stay in your seat.
Monkey: (ok, woman, you clearly didn't understand me - let's try this again) MONKEY (well, her real name, but you get the picture) sit daddy's lap?
Me: No, sweetie, you can't sit on daddy's lap, but thanks for the clarification!
***
Scene: On the bus this morning.
Action: Passengers disembarking from the bus.
Monkey: BYE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!
***
Me: (giving Monkey a kiss) Monkey, you are such a sweet kid.
Monkey: No kisses mommy, no kisses.
Me: Snort, giggle, ok, maybe you aren't so sweet after all.
***
Scene: In the elevator, holding a balloon from a birthday party, well past her naptime...
Action: Monkey grabs the balloon, pulls it to her face, and it bursts.
Me & M: quick uptake of breath, waiting for the screams to commence.
Monkey: What happened? (and NO screams!)
Me & M: giggle, laugh, phew!

Music to my ears
Tonight it is M's turn to read to Monkey and put her to bed. We trade off, so we both get to read books to her, snuggle with her on the glider, and revel in her presence.
Tonight, Monkey chose a book full of songs. So M sang.
It is music to my ears. They are so happy.
And I couldn't love them more.

Well, it's Monday to me!
I realize that today is Tuesday. But it feels like a Monday to me, since I was on vacation through last night.
And, to get my week started correctly, this morning I got on the bus with Monkey and something ridiculous like 18 bags only to discover that 1) my metrocard had expired and 2) I had no change. Crap. Like I couldn't have figured that out before I held up the commute of 40 other people.....
Let's just say thank god for grandmas - one kindly swapped dollar bills for quarters, I paid our way, and the bus moved on. She even leaned over to confide to me that she, too, was just back from vacation and still getting used to things.
Monkey leaned over, too, to get closer and repeat "thank you." Damn, that kid is cute sometimes!

Robots in the back yard
Monkey is obsessed with robots. Some kids like dinosaurs, others like construction equipments, and mine? Well, she loves robots.
Let's just say that she loves robots so much we're actually considering taking her to an afternoon screening of Wall*E. And yes, we are officially insane. No one in their right mind should take a 23 month old to a movie that isn't shown in their (or grandma and grandpa's) living room.
This past weekend was spent in lovely Wayzata, MN. The occasion that prompted our trip to Mpls was my 20th High School reunion (yes, stinker, go ahead and do the math - but I warn you, I look pretty good for a knocked-up 38 year old!).
Monkey spent quality time with Grandma and 'Andpa, Nana and Grandad, her beloved cousin Emma, Uncle Jason and Aunt Lauri, and my mother's little fluffmoppet otherwise known as the dog Tre. She was in HEAVEN.
'Andpa happens to keep bees in his backyard (don't ask, he just does, yes the honey tastes wonderful and no, they don't live on a farm) and he and his bee-keeping partner-in-crime Tom suited up and monitored the hives. Apparently they were adding trays for honey and checking the hives general health.
Monkey saw them from the kitchen window and asked what they were. And M, being the ever so creative dad, told her they were robots. Man, was she excited! REAL LIVE FREAKIN' ROBOTS MOM! ROBOTS! (toddlers really can speak in all caps - you didn't know that?)
She was disappointed when the left and kept asking "where did they go?"
Like Santa and the Easter Bunny, I don't think I'm ever going to set her straight on this one. I'ts more fun this way.

The Big Reveal
So, we practiced and we practiced, and when it came time for the big reveal - Monkey got it RIGHT! She told her grandparents that "it's a girl." Yup, BGC#2 (that's baby girl carter #2 to you) is on her way.
We are thrilled.
Only, now we are debating (i.e., playing dirty pool and asking Monkey which name she prefers) the name for BGC#2.
M has a preppy name picked out. I have a more classical name picked out.......
As they say, let the best man (or woman) win.

Um, how did that happen?
So I had the amnio last week, and so far all is well (we did what they call FISH, which gives you a quick check on common genetic abnormalities such as down syndrome, etc.). We still need to wait for about another 5 days to get the full report to rule out neural tube defects (aka spina bifida and the like), but we feel good about our odds on that.
Which is to say, yeah! Healthy baby!!
Before the amnio, they do a pretty in depth sonogram, and if you ask they'll tell you the gender.
So we asked. And they told us. We were thrilled! Then, they changed their mind - nope, it's the other gender. And we were thrilled! And went home and told lots of folks we were having a ____. (Note, there will be no reveal of the gender in this post - we're telling both sets of grandparents in person this weekend)
And the next day, the lovely genetics counselor assigned to us called me and told me the good news about the results. And I asked her for confirmation on the gender.
And it was ___ again - the FIRST answer we got! My head ached from the flipping back and forth.
I stammered out "how did that happen?" (I didn't realize I'd said it outloud...) and the counselor started in on how "you need an x and ...." - I cut her off. I know HOW the genetics worked, I was just flummoxed by getting one answer, then another, and then the original answer again. So again, I just said "yeah!" and left it at that. I think she must have thought I slept through high school biology or something. But who cares - we're having a _____, yeah!!!!

Buzz Cut
In the inexorable process of becoming a Big Girl, Monkey's hair has never been cut. Not one, single, beautiful strand of hair on her head has been harmed. She's got virgin hair folks, and it is looooooooooooooong.
It is so long that if we do a hackneyed job of putting on her diaper (because she wriggles and won't stand still, dammit), it practically gets tucked into the back.
Each day, it comes home with shards and remnants of that day's activities in it: paint, yogurt, sunblock, fruit juice (mmmm, peaches sure get messy in the hands of a 23 month old!), etc.
It now requires more than an occasional brushing. We are in full-blown knot removal and detangling efforts these days.
And, Grandma said it looked (shock, horror! she's no less blunt now than when I was a wee child! heh) "scraggly." Harrumph.
So, tomorrow we pack our ear plugs (in case she screams), tic tacs (for bribery and rewards) and our courage.....and we're cutting her hair. Or rather, paying someone to do it for us while we cringe and take a million photos.

Poor little rat....
So Monkey loves to watch the Pixar movies. Nemo and Monsters Inc. are in heavy circulation (replacing, thank the G*ds above, the dreaded Elmo and his insipid voice. *shudder*). We don't always watch them, or even watch very much, but she LOVES the Crush the turtle in Nemo and Boo in Monsters.
So, the other night we decided to try out another of our favorites - Ratatouille. You know, with Remy the rat that cooks. In Paris. If you haven't seen it, it is a wonderful little story, and not really for kids!
Which, oh, we kind of realized the hard way.
See, at the beginning, Remy and his thick-witted brother are raiding the kitchen of a little old lady in an attempt to find saffron. And, the little old lady wakes up....and starts shooting at them with her shotgun.
The rats are fleeing in terror, scrambling around the kitchen, swinging from the chandelier, and this tough old lady just keeps on shooting.
And then I hear Monkey whimpering. Saying no mice, no no, oh no mice. I look at her and see a look of abject horror on her face, and (cue feeling like the worst mommy EVAH)....tears in her eyes.
We paused the movie, and kept reassuring her that Remy was ok. I don't remember if we fast forwarded to a section showing Remy alive and well or not, but I do remember wondering if this was the sort of thing that would scar her/stick with her for a while. The guilt, it starts so early!

Takes my breath away
Wow, Monkey really is growing up. Sometimes it takes my breath away to realize what a defined person, what a "big girl" she's become. And it makes me so proud yet also almost breaks my heart in the exact same moment.
Sometimes she'll say or do something that makes me realize how much she's grown and changed in the last 23 months. It's always simple things, like saying "wow, so windy" when the wind whips her hair.
And sometimes, I run across an old photo and I can hardly believe the changes. Here's a photo that is almost precisely 12 months old - from a birthday party we went to in July:

Then fast forward to this year, at her boyfriend Caleb's second birthday party!:

Last year she was just starting to walk.
This year, she's running like a fiend and stuffing her face with cake. And occasionally holding hands with her boyfriend. No photos of that, alas - it was too fleeting for me to capture with my camera. But I'll always remember it. I think it was the first time I realized that someday, she's going to grow up and maybe even have her own family.

Everybody loves a parade
So the long 4th of July weekend was great, even if Monkey is getting her two-year molars in. (Poor thing, she keeps shoving her hand in her mouth and saying "sore" "sore" over and over, then begging for an icee, aka a baby's teether that has been frozen).
On Friday the 4th, Monkey marched in her very first 4th of July parade. She even wore a red white and blue swimsuit - because she's patriotic like that (ok, that just happens to be the suit I got for her at Target). The parade rocked. As did the lemonade and watermelon handed out afterwards.
Being that this is New York City, the parage was led by a firetruck with its water cannon ready to soak everyone at the culmination of the parade. And, being that this is New York, halfway through the parage the firetruck got a call and drove away. Leaving the kids puzzled. And the adults, too, until word spread that the firemen (and women!) had left to oh, go save some lives.
The bummer was that we didn't get sprayed by the water cannon. I would have liked that.
Photos to come, I promise.
