Father(s) of the year

Hoo boy. This weekend was awesome. Here we were thinking it was going to rain and be gross all weekend long, forcing us to listen to incessant whining about watching (yet another) Arthur cartoon, or the Astroboy movie trailer for the googoleth time (because you know that googol is actually a word, right? It’s a 1 with 100 zeros after it…don’t believe me? Google it! Ha)….but then??? We had AWESOME weather!

Not surprisingly, we went to the park. Often more than once a day!

And we played in the sandbox(es). Good times.

That is, until Monkey picked up and fondled a piece of dog crap. Ok, fondled might be too strong of a word. But it was ALL over her hands. Oy. I know it was dog crap because, well, the smell. You KNOW that smell. The smell that hits you and stays with you, following you down the block, forcing you to check and recheck the bottom of your shoes, until finally it is replaced by a different smell. But you still check your shoes one more time, just because….the smell. It kind of burns into your nose and lingers there, unwanted, uninvited, uninhibited….ugh.

We cleaned her off as best we could, with wipes and hand sanitizer (thank you purell gods!) and headed home to really wash up. M, in his infinite capacity to be a good dad, hoisted Monkey up on his shoulders and gave her a ride home.

Halfway home, in a rather strangled sounding voice, M asked Monkey to stop playing with his hair. And, you know, to stop sticking her (poopy) fingers into his ears. I tried not to visibly shudder or audibly laugh. I tried SOOO hard. But when M announced that he needed to shower? I had to laugh. (and shudder).

He SO wins father of the year for that.

Also up for honorable mention? My little brother, who called me this morning to say that he still had vomit in his pants pockets after an unpleasant visit to the pediatrician with his insane toddler, HP. Squish, squish. He, too, was headed home for a shower.

Let’s hear it for the dads!!!!

proof of life

see, we're still here! just busy....doing stuff on the floor, you know. stuff.

um, like I said, we're busy.

Queen Bee

This morning when I dropped Monkey off at school she did her normal thing, which is to immediately grab a book and sit on one of the (precious, toddler-sized) chairs in the reading corner.

She grinned at me and J (one of her beloved teachers) and chattered happily with her friends.

Then, because I moved something that should not have been moved (heaven forbid her water bottle be in the wrong place!!!! oh noooo!!) she popped out of the chair to redress this grevious wrong.

And Eli took her spot.

I turned my attention to the water bottle issue, ascertained that a UN delegation would not be needed to solve this pressing matter for world peace, and turned back to a scene of toddler brutality. Roman and Caleb were, quite literally, pushing and hitting Eli in an attempt to forcibly remove him from the chair. I was a bit taken aback by this display of testosterone so early in the morning (not to mention in their lives!) but the brawl settled down a few seconds later when another teacher invited Eli to clean up his blocks.....and Monkey retook the throne.

I looked at J, a bit puzzled, and she nodded. "Yes, that was all about Monkey."

Who said chivalry was dead?

the Observer Principle...

We signed Monkey up for an "enrichment" program at school - soccer classes. And according to her "coach," when I am not there, Monkey does a great job.

But, every single time I get there early enough to watch......meh, she won't play. She will kick the ball maybe once, then she lands on the ball or hides in the corner, or generally just declines to play - often swaying back and forth, saying "but I don't WANT to....." It's like that scientific principle that, by virtue of observing something, you change it. Which means that the tree falls in the woods and no one knows what it sounds like or, um, something like that.

What I overheard this morning....

Monkey: Can you help me? I need to check my elmo.

M: Huh?

Monkey: I NEED TO CHECK MY ELMO!

Me: sotto voice - she means "email" I think!

M: Do you mean email?

Monkey: Yes. Elmo. I need to check it.

M: Ok - go ahead. Who is emailing you?

Monkey: My bear.

M: And what does your bear say?

Monkey: ribbit, ribbit (like a frog).

L'il bean

So, she started out tiny (6lbs) and...not surprisingly, she's STILL tiny. In the 3-5% percentile for weight. Yup, tiny. We had a 5 month check-up today (purely to weigh her and make sure she is on-track) and she weighed in at a whopping 11lbs, 12oz. That's only a little bit more than a bag of sugar!!

Still, she's SO stinkin' cute.....

she's my little jellybean!

Of course she did

Today is picture day at school.

At approximately 6:45am Monkey decided to become an acrobat and jumped on my bed and.....

wait for it....

....flew off and landed ON her face on the hardwood floor.

I'm pretty sure she’s got a shiner.

ROFL

Monkey is in the habit of summoning me to her side for various reasons. More water, more pretzels, reaching a toy that is centimeters past her reach, etc.

She'll yell, and yell, and yell "mommy, come here" over and over again. And again. And again.

This can become rather, well, tiring.

So yesterday, when her highness summoned me once again, I was pleasantly surprised to find that her demand was "laugh with me mommy, laugh with me."

We stood at the window and laughed at the rain. Good, deep, belly laughs.

She can demand I do that anytime.

Modern motherhood

Our nanny is sick so Jellybean came to work today. If I could figure out how to turn it sideways I would.....but really, it's emblematic of how this Friday turned out (all messed up!) so hey, tilt your head and laugh......
